LILLE KNOCKED OUT OF EUROPA LEAGUE

Canada striker Jonathan David was a second half substitute as Lille were knocked out of the Europa League by Dutch champions Ajax Amsterdam at the round of 32 stage. The Canada national team player was not in the Lille starting XI for the away game at Ajax. The Dutch team had beaten Lille 2-1 away from home in the first leg of their last 32 tie last week Thursday. Canada player Jonathan David was subbed on during the second leg with his team trailing by a lone goal. As at the time of his entrance into the game, Davy Klaassenhad given Ajax Amsterdam the lead. His goal was scored on 15 minutes to take his team to 3-1 on aggregate against Lille. Canada striker Jonathan David came on for Jonathan Bamba shortly after the hour mark. Lille improved significantly with his presence in attack. Lille went on to score the equaliserfrom the penalty spot on 78 minutes through Turkish attacking midfielder Yusuf Yazici. At the point of that Lille equaliser, the French Ligue 1 table toppersneeded one more goal to take the game into extra time but they were unable to achieve this.Lille went on to concede a second goal with two minutes left on the clock to exit the competition at the round of 32 stage. Ajax Amsterdam got their second goal through Brazilian attacker David Neresto progress into theround of 16 of the competition. Ajax Amsterdam won both legs 2-1 to advance into the next round via a 4-2 aggregate win.


The reward for beating Canada player Jonathan David and his Lille players in the last 32 of the Europa League is a last 16 meeting with Young Boys of Switzerland for a place in the quarterfinals. On their part, Lille will switch focus to league football. They are at the top of the table in the French top flight. Lille are ahead of Lyon, title holders Paris Saint Germain (PSG) and AS Monaco in the race for the French Ligue 1 title this season.
